SCHOOL HISTORY

Maonon Elementary School is one of the farthest school, located in a coastal
barangay of Ligao City which is about 52 kilometers away from the City
proper.

Before 1947 children of Barrio Maonon would walk kilometers to Barrio Basicao
or Barrio Cabarian to be able to attend school, so in 1947, through the
initiative of the Teniente del Barrio, Sto. Tomas and the parents, a grade one
class was organized.

With a number of children to be nurtured in the place, Mr. Teotimo Bataller of
Sitio Tambac, was assigned in the place to organize classes in the year 1947,
he was the only teacher permanently teaching the children.

Believing that the school could not be stopped for having a big number of
school children enrolled year by year, a portion of the lot owned by Mauricio
Sapao was purchased by the parents while the remaining portion to
complete the one hectare lot was donated by him.

In that same year, a temporary classroom was built, it was made of bamboo,
anahaw and other light materials, it was formally named as Maonon
Elementary School in the Division of Albay. Unfortunately the school building
made from local materials were severely damaged by typhoon. Until after
the government gave aid for the construction of two new concrete school
building.

At first, children after they reached Grade Four had to continue their
schooling at Basicao Elementary School at a nearby Barrio, so very few
children finished elementary level.

Not until the school year 1966 - 1967, Maonon Elementary School reached its
complete elementary school, which marks the 1st Graduation Exercises.

In order to established the transfer of the property ownership, in 1994,
Herminio Iglesia who purchased the 3.6 hectare-lot owned by Mauricio
Sapao which includes the school site, formalized the donation of a one
hectare lot (6562-A) on February 24, 1994, through a donation of real
property to Barangay Maonon under TCT No. 89519.
In 1967 a Marcos Type building was built, in 1975 the Bagong Lipunan, in
1980, the RP – US Bayanihan, in 1981the PTA Room was added, then the
Mayon type was built in 1995, FVR building was built in 2003, DPWH building
was added in 2005 and the Pre School building in 2009, repairs were made
and the school progressed during the succeeding years up to the present,
having 8 buildings and 14 academic classrooms catering the 445 pupils at
present.

Elementary School from 1947 to present: TEOTIMO BATALLER, RAFAEL RAYALA,
ANTONIO RABE, BIENA IGLESIA – CLEOFE, AVELINA MENDONES, ARTEMIO
BALUBAR, ROMULO VIÑAS, NORA SAPAO, ROSIE LLADOC, ROSITA ELAURZA,
DEXTER PIELAGO, MERCY TEJANO, LUCAS MANGENTE, LEO IRWIN LINDIO, MELYN
M. ORBASE and ESTER L. MALIGAYA.
